The effect of the bilateral medial rectus recession

Abstract
In order to investigate the effects of bilateral medial rectus recession for the surgical correction of esotropia, the author analysed postoperative amount of correction on 22 patients whit various types of esotropia at Kyungpook National
University
Hospital.
The 4.5/4.5-5mm recession group contained 5 patients with preoperative esotropia ranging from 30 to 40 prim diopters. In this patient group, the average amount of correction was 28.0 prism diopters. Nine patients underwent a 5/5-5.5mm reecssion
for
preoperative deviations ranging from 35 to 45 prism diopters. The amount of correction for this group averaged 36.4 prism diopters, Eight patients with preoperative deviation ranging from 45 to 59 prism diopters received on 6/5.5-6mm recession of
each
medial rectus, resulting the amount of correction of 38.9 prism diopters. Analysis of postoperative deviation shows that all patients receiving 4.5/4.5-5mm recession and eight of the nine receiving 5/5-5.5mm recession and six of the eight
receiving
6/5.5-6mm recession were realigned to within 10 prism diopters of orthophoria with an overall success rate (¡¾10 prism diopters) of eighty six percent.
